MA Performance
Dance
Launched in September 2006, mapdance is University of Chichester’s MA Student Performance Company jointly directed by Jerwood Award Winner, Yael Flexer (Bedlam Dance Company) and Detta Howe (Ginger Dance Theatre). Now in its fourth year, mapdance has
established itself as an exciting company of young,
dynamic dancers recruited nationally and internationally, performing a diverse repertoire by renowned and upcoming contemporary choreographers.
This year the company is performing works by
Shobana Jeyasingh (Shobana Jeyasingh
Dance
Company), Matthias Sperling (Random), Gregory
Maqoma (Vuyani Dance Theatre),
Colin Poole (Rambert, The Mission/State of Emergency) and
Keira Martin (Kompany Malakhi): a programme that offers a refreshing mixture of dance theatre, intricate lyrical choreography, fluid released movement and intriguing humour. It is a mixed programme with something for everyone and will appeal to both the experienced dance-goer and to audiences new to dance.
mapdance is in line with University of Chichester’s reputation for innovation in dance and new technology research. The company adopts a broad approach to dance making and performance by working with established artists as well as young choreographers. It is keen to work in partnership with venues, festivals and promoters, creating special events and participatory educational and performance projects.
In addition to the performance programme, mapdance also offers a range of educational work including residencies, one-off workshops and the opportunity for young people to perform alongside the company, opening the show with a specially created ‘curtain raiser’ – guaranteed to bring an audience of friends and family.
The company also offers tailor-made educational residencies led by company performers specialising in pedagogical dance studies and performance: one-off workshops, dedicated choreographic projects or specially created ‘curtain raisers' that give young people opportunities to perform with the company.
“mapdance is very much one of the leading players in terms of graduate performance of contemporary dance….it transcended what we may perceive to be student dance and held its own in terms of disciplined, focussed and innovative work from a very accomplished young ensemble.”
